He&#8217;s been identified as 69-year-old Bruce Vernon, of Marengo and his death has been ruled an accident.<\/p>\n<h2>Body of Driver recovered<\/h2>\n<p>Details of exactly how the tragedy <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/09\/14\/dump-truck-driver-fatally-plunges-hundreds-of-feet-into-indiana-water-pit-on-the-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">happened<\/a> haven&#8217;t yet been released but apparently the driver was somehow just a little too close to the edge and once the truck started to slip over, there was no stopping it. The vehicle weighed several-tons.<\/p>\n<p>A statement notes that the &#8220;<em>Mulzer Crushed Stone Inc. employee was driving the massive dump truck near the cliff before it went over the edge around 2 p.m. Tuesday.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Workers who saw the truck plunge into the pit instantly called rescuers. At the same time, they started grading a path for first responders to be able to approach the water line. As for what <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingheadlinestories.com\/index.php\/2023\/09\/13\/were-sitting-on-a-bonanza-of-lithium-but-mining-it-angers-natives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exactly<\/a> is in that water, nobody is giving any specifics. Onlookers could only watch in horror, with no way to get anywhere close enough to help.<\/p>\n<p>When &#8220;<em>first responders reached the scene,<\/em>&#8221; they had trouble searching for the driver due to &#8220;<em>steep, unstable terrain<\/em>&#8221; around the pit.<\/p>\n<p>They were really happy that &#8220;<em>employees with the company constructed a temporary path that helped conservation officers reach the water by boat.<\/em>&#8221; for them to even enter the water.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-641\" src=\"https:\/\/breakingheadlinestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/quarry02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/breakingheadlinestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/quarry02.jpg 800w, https:\/\/breakingheadlinestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/quarry02-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/breakingheadlinestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/quarry02-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/breakingheadlinestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/quarry02-380x214.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Not a stable work environment<\/h2>\n<p>As soon as rescue teams could get a boat in the water they used sonar to locate the truck and it&#8217;s driver about 20 feet below the surface.<\/p>\n<p>The way Indiana Conservation Officer Jim Schreck explains it, &#8220;<em>as you can imagine a quarry is not the most stable environment to work in. For our searches, we have to make sure it&#8217;s a safe, stable environment.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Their efforts were seriously &#8220;<em>hampered by the terrain.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Search and rescue efforts continue at Mulzer Crushed Stone\u2019s Cape Sandy location after a dump truck went over an embankment into a water pit yesterday afternoon. Divers searched the area yesterday, and the search resumed this morning:<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3FOkhX6ZQK\">https:\/\/t.co\/3FOkhX6ZQK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Morgan Jemtrud (@morgan_jemtrud) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/morgan_jemtrud\/status\/1701993950347681969?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 13, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Recovery efforts included using a &#8220;<em>remote-operated submersible<\/em>&#8221; to confirm the position of the driver and how he was tangled with the wreckage.<\/p>\n<p>A scuba team brave enough to face a questionable cocktail of chemicals in the water then pulled the lifeless body of the unfortunate driver out of the submerged truck, which was sitting upside down.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t help that the quarry site lies in a remote part of Indiana.
