Many of us have heard the phrase “beware of strangers,” but never before has it been so true as for an unnamed man from Miami who encountered a female stranger at a club and brought her home with him.
What happened next was heartbreaking – he woke up to find that this woman had stolen over $600,000 worth of his belongings.
The story serves as a warning to everyone – always be aware of your surroundings and take precautions when inviting someone into your home.
On one late night out at “The Dirty Rabbit Wynwood” bar and dance club in Miami, Florida, this unnamed man met an unidentified woman who he felt comfortable enough to bring back to his home downtown around 5:30am.
After having only one drink together, he quickly passed out due to what is believed to be drugging.
“And he was having some drinks, met this lady, and said, ‘Hey, let’s go back to my apartment,’” Miami Police Officer Michael Vega said. “She offered to pour him a drink, he begins to sip on his drink, and about three sips in, he falls asleep,” Vega said.
When he awoke around noon, it was too late–the woman had already left with some very valuable items including two Rolex watches along with other jewelry such as gold chains, Franco Gold bracelets, Cartier sunglasses and a rose gold diamond ring.
“His safe is opened, all his jewelry is gone, and the female is nowhere to be seen,” Vega said.
Fortunately for the victim and the police officers dispatched to his residence after being alerted by the theft report, there was security footage available that showed both the arrival and departure of the suspect who appeared to be in her mid-thirties.
Interestingly enough, she was seen leaving with something peculiar in her hands – two blue Solo cups which were apparently evidence of her crime according to authorities.
“Now sometimes you might say, ‘Oh, well she’s just leaving with a Solo cup.’ No. She’s taking the Solo cup that she drank because it has her DNA. She’s taking his Solo cup because it has not only his DNA, but it also has whatever drugs she put in,” explained Officer Michael Vega, an MPD spokesman.
It goes without saying that it is indeed always a gamble when you invite someone you just met into your home whether or not they have been drinking alcohol or drugs are involved.
Especially if you don’t know them well enough yet.
“We always say, be careful, do not take strangers home, and here we have it again,” Vega said.
In this case not only did our victim lose expensive items but could have also suffered much worse than simply losing money.
This makes it even more important that we all remember this cautionary tale whenever we’re tempted by today’s popular hookup culture trend and instead use common sense when making decisions about bringing people back home with us after nights out on town.
Let this be a cautionary tale: next time you go out, be extra wary of strangers…you never know what people can be capable of.
