Assassination Threat Made Against Top Republican

A man from Endicott, New York was sentenced to three months in prison and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to sending threatening voicemails to the Washington D.C. office of Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Joseph F. Morelli, age 51, admitted to sending multiple messages that included threats of physical harm and references to paying someone else to hurt the congresswoman.

Morelli pleaded guilty after admitting to issuing the threats which included phrases such as “I’m gonna have to take your life into my own hands… I’m gonna hurt you. Physically, I’m gonna harm you” and “I’m gonna have to show you, to your face, right up front, what violence truly is, and I don’t think you’re gonna like it.… I can pay someone 500 bucks to take a baseball bat and crack your skull. …You are going to get f**king physically hurt.”

He issued all three of these messages on March 3, 2022.

The press release did not name Rep. Greene but she was identified in several news reports soon after – many of which pointed out the double-standard that Rep Green faced when compared with other liberal lawmakers who had received more media attention despite similar threats being made against them.

She took notice of this discrepancy as she argued for two-tiered justice being served by the media covering her case differently than they would have if it were a threat against a Democrat like Rep. Ilhan Omar.

As per her own statement, she said “the press keeps asking me about threats against Rep [Ilhan] Omar, but none of them knew about this guilty plea for a threat against my life.”

The press has been largely silent when it comes to reporting on threats against congressional Republicans like Rep. Greene.

“Multiple people who want to kill me have been arrested, but the DC media doesn’t report it,” said Greene about the lack of press coverage since her story is not as politically expedient as other stories that may generate more clicks or views for their respective outlets.

Rep. Greene is seeking $66,632 in restitution from Morelli in order to cover costs associated with shoring up security at her home due to his threats which Chief U.S District Judge Brenda K Sannes deferred deciding on until a later date according to court documents released by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York (NDNY).

It will be interesting to see how this develops but it’s sad to recognize that someone can make such a serious threat as this towards a Republican congresswoman and receive a light sentence of just three months.

It makes one wonder what the consequence would look like if we were discussing a Democrat.
