The early morning of August 31 brought a terrible tragedy. Five rail workers were killed in a train crash near the town of Brandizzo in Northern Italy. At the time of the incident, the out-of-service train was transporting wagons on the Milan-Turin line and collided with a group of workers that were performing overnight maintenance.

Authorities initially estimated that the train was moving at around 100 mph, but railway police lowered this estimate to about 62 mph. Two other workers were able to get away from the scene unharmed, although they were left in shock.

Brandizzo Mayor Paolo Bodoni described what one of his colleagues saw at the tracks as “chilling” with human remains scattered over a distance of 300 meters.

Local witnesses report hearing a loud noise resembling an accident shortly before midnight when it happened.

Investigators believe the train drivers weren’t aware there were people in its path due to lack of communication between them and those who should have signaled its approach.

In response to this tragic event, rail unions across Italy announced their staff members will be taking part in a half-day strike in protest against lowering safety standards to save time or money.

Maurizio Landini, head of Italy’s biggest union stated: “Too many tragedies at work are caused by lowering safety standards to speed things up and cut costs.”

Further investigations into this incident are still underway as authorities look into what truly happened leading up to this tragedy.

We can only imagine the trauma local witnesses and fellow rail workers experienced as a result of this incident. Our thoughts are with them at this time.
