Immigration to the United States is a privilege, not a right.

And yet there are those who still choose to enter the country illegally.

We’ve all heard stories about the tragedy of illegal immigration, but there is no story more heartbreaking than that of Margarito Quintero-Rosales.

In 2008, he was deported and yet, a decade later he found himself in the United States illegally once again.

And unfortunately, this time his actions resulted in a devastating car accident that ultimately took the lives of three innocent individuals.

The incident occurred when Quintero-Rosales fell asleep behind the wheel of a van while driving down a Texas highway.

He crossed over the center line and ultimately struck another vehicle head-on.

That car was being driven by Collin County volunteer firefighter Captain Peter Hacking who had his four year old daughter Ellie and 22 month old son Grayson with him at the time.

All three tragically lost their lives in what can only be described as an avoidable tragedy caused by one man’s selfishness and disregard for law and order.

This left Courtney Hacking with an unfathomable burden that she will carry forever: mourning her husband and two children alone while raising her four remaining children without them.

The pain is compounded even further when one considers that justice has not been served for such a heinous crime.

Quintero-Rosales was arrested at the scene of the accident and held in jail until his conviction but ultimately struck a deal with prosecutors from Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis’ office.

After pleading guilty to criminally negligent homicide, Quintero-Rosales was sentenced to just two years behind bars – less than 6 months given his credit for time served – leaving Courtney feeling like her family’s tragedy has been treated as nothing more than a “slap on the wrist”.

This sentence did not bring any comfort or closure for Courtney whose grief will continue every day without her husband or children by her side.

The frustration Courtney feels over this inadequate sentence has led her to take matters into her own hands as she works with federal lawmakers on bringing harsher punishments for illegal immigrants who break the law.

She believes their status as illegal immigrants should be seen as an aggravating factor when considering sentences for criminal behavior they may commit while living here illegally – sending out a message that coming here illegally will result in harsher penalties than normal if they choose to participate in any activities that could harm others or themselves while residing here unlawfully.

As Courtney continues to look for ways to bring about harsher punishments for illegal immigrants who break our laws, it is important to note that this case should serve as reminder of why we must continue fighting against illegal immigration both locally and nationally.

While no amount of punishment will ever make up for such an immense loss or erase all signs of heartbreak from those affected, it serves as another example of why we need stronger measures to ensure criminals are held accountable for their actions regardless or their status in this country or any other.
