Late in the evening on September 4, firefighters rushed to the scene of a massive fire that broke out at the Department of Transportation warehouse located in Willets Point, Queens. Bright orange flames from the chemical fire were seen shooting from the roof of 32-11 Harper Street from miles away. Thankfully, no one was inside when the fire started and 5 firefighters were treated for minor injuries related to fatigue after putting out the blaze.

The FDNY worked tirelessly for over four hours to get the blaze under control.

One major obstacle they faced was a lack of water supply in this remote area.

To combat this, members of the Marine Harbor Unit had to connect water from the bay to their hoses.

“We drafted water and used water from the bay, drafting it to tower ladders” said FDNY Assistant Chief Joseph Ferrante, “You could almost look right through the building” as he noted that while much of it was destroyed, its contents remained intact due largely in part to his team’s efforts.

Residents living near 32-11 Harper Street were warned by city officials to close their windows due to potentially hazardous materials inside but FDNY assured them that these materials are similar to any found in a typical garage with vehicles present.

Luis Enrique Loja who frequently visits Willets Point Bay said “Something like this hasn’t happened here… The black smoke is harmful” when asked about his reaction upon seeing such an event occur on his usual route.

As employees returned the following morning, many questions remain unanswered about whether or not this facility will be able to fully function again after such extensive damage occurred overnight.
